Our church plant was presented with a unique challenge during the month of December 2015: the recreation center where we meet for our weekly worship services was only available 1 of the 4 Sundays. God was not surprised by this scheduling challenge, so we rolled with the punches and discovered what God’s plan for Rising Church was for the Christmas season.
On Sunday, December 6, we decided to focus our efforts towards a Christmas outreach in Heritage Square, one of the neighborhoods in Leesburg that we have been building relationships and meeting needs in (going back to this summer with VBS, block parties, etc.).
Our KidsMin – Kid’s on the Rise – had been working for several weeks on a musical presentation. Our 6 kids sang 3 songs and they all had various lines memorized to communicate the story of Christmas. Neva then followed with a Christmas carol sing-a-long to get the whole crowd involved. I wrapped up our presentation with a Christmas devotion based on the meaning behind the candy cane.
We broke all of the kids up into 3 different groups and they spent the next hour playing Christmas games, decorating Christmas cookies, and making Christmas crafts. We entertained their parents with coffee and hot chocolate. All in all, 43 kids from the neighborhood and 17 adults – none of whom we have yet to see at a “regular” Sunday morning worship service – joined us for our Christmas for Kids Outreach.
I was also encouraged and blessed by the members of Rising Church as they jumped right into help with setup, at the various stations and with clean up. I didn’t have to prompt or ask anyone to do anything. Our team took charge and did an amazing job blessing this neighborhood (and me) with the message of Christmas!
