Psalm 85Over the last few months God has reminded me and taught me the wonderful discipline of praying Scripture back to Him. Great leaders of the Old Testament like Moses and David made regular habit of praying back and reminding God of His promises and truth. As I have implemented this discipline in my life God has brought me to Psalm 85. I pray and read this Psalm back to God almost daily. The first 3 verse remind God of his faithfulness to His people throughout history, the next 6 verses are intercession to God on behalf of current condition of the people, and the final 4 verses proclaim our expectation to God’s faithful and favorable response moving forward. We can believe Him for these things because He has been faithful to them in the past (v. 1-3). I have subbed out some of the pronouns to make it a more personal prayer for my city and ministry field, and I will even place people’s names in this Psalm as I plead with God for their salvation.

Psalm 85 – ESV

Lord, you were favorable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you covered all their sin. (Selah)
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you turned from your hot anger.

Restore LEESBURG again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward LEESBURG!
Will you be angry with LEESBURG forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive LEESBURG again,
    that your people may rejoice in you?
Show LEESBURG your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant LEESBURG your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
    but let LEESBURG not turn back to folly.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
    righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good,
    and LEESBURG will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way.

Amen.

I encourage you to pray this prayer Psalm over your city. Pray it over people God has placed on your heart that need His salvation and insert their names into it instead of your city. Pray this prayer diligently, believing God for revival in our nation which will only come about by a revival in our lives.

Praying with you!
